Who thinks seaside is best seen when clouds, wind and some cold temperatures combine? I guess mostly no one, and that includes me, as tradition has it that we need sun, sun, sun (to have fun). :-) However, Normandy could not get it more easily with those three as they naturally come by default, so much that you could not imagine or want other way. Sun is there, behind the clouds, but who needs it anyway?

Denmark and Sweden are nice. So nice that my Canon 350d photo camera suddenly decided to settle there for good. Goodbye dear Canon, and hello new Panasonic Lumix LX5. It's a new dawn, it's a new day, it's a new life and...all the rest :-)

p.s: did i say Denmark and Sweden are nice? I have the proof above to show it. And if someday, anyone in any corner of this world does find and sends some similar pictures taken with a Canon 350d, well, that would be the greatest thing in the world, wouldn't it?

The far, far away

"If you think America is far away, than it is really further away than you can think of"! This is how i started my first email to friends and family, exactly 4 hours after i had landed for the first time in US via California. I was so tired after the trip, and everything around me seemed to be so strange and different than the European style (because yes, until now i could compare Romania with other European countries and find a lot of differences, but now even those appeared to be the same compared to US :-)). However, i could not put a finger on the things that made me feel this way, and after three weeks of living there, well, those feelings were totally gone, so i now make bigger efforts to remember them.

The main thing i felt about America is that everything was big. Arriving in Palo Alto, California, i could see big streets and houses not so close to each other. And then there were big cars, big food, big drinks, big everything. All those big spaces not being used (like for example in Europe where everything is crammed), together with jet lag that made me dizzy for some days created for my European self a general feeling on loneliness, similar to one an astronaut might get when setting foot on some empty far away planet. :-)

But then, there was San Francisco, with urban styles, tall buildings, cool streets, ocean view, fresh sea food you can eat on the go, the Golden Gate, hearing Pink Floyd while waiting for the nice tram that takes you up and down, beautiful views, and everything changed. :-)

2009 meant traveling like there's no tomorrow, here and there and everywhere, but at the same time responsibly settling to a place i now call home. Shoes now carry happy memories being walked on so different places, and as blue was the new green in 2009, can't wait for my 2010 color obsessions. :-)

Chios island

Sometimes it's not the place you're traveling to, but the way you choose to get there that's a whole big adventure. So let's say you could choose flying by some plane that fails to take off twice, or you take an 8 hours ferry trip on a stormy night through the Cyclades (sitting on the deck, otherwise you miss all the fun :-)), or just maybe a car drive at 4am in the morning. And when putting them all together you could get here, somewhere near the Asia Minor coast, but still on Greek grounds with mountains and sea combined.

So what should this Chios island be all about? Living in a small summer house, floating in the blue sea, looking after fish and sea urchins, fishing sometimes, reading some good book on the pebbled beach, driving a scooter over the mastic tree hills, wandering around mountains and discovering small forgotten villages and history all over the place. And most of all, peace of mind.

Chios is famous for its mastic trees, that produce some resin used in foods and cosmetics. They grow only on this island, and require special care from local farmers.

...are these beauties, growing now on my balcony, catching the last rays of sun in the autumnal evenings. Who knows me might add I'm not a plant grower, because all my experiences so far have been more or less disastrous, but somehow these flowers managed to resist some very harsh conditions. :-) And sadly now, sun sets much too early in Bucharest's 25 degrees autumn, for me to enjoy them at the fullest.

What is there in life more to wish for? Some lovely moments when the surprise is being revealed, it hardly fits into a car, 80kg of it are carried on a spiral stairway, and then it's there, it's yours, in your room, in your face, like in your dreams, but this time you touch it and it's perfect. It's been 3 years precisely, but now it's real. Thank you D, for this incredible present on the rainiest day of May!

Guess the things you expect less from, surprise you the most. That is the general rule i've learned over the years, but still catches me unguarderd every single time.
The case might not have been the same with Rome, as it is known it has its dolce vita style, beautiful mediterranean architecture, some good old history to go with and let's not forget the most important part, il grande gelato. :-) And still, after being aware of this, i was a bit skeptical until i was in the middle of it all. But then, there i was standing...with a big smile on my surprised face, if only it would have been for the first time.

And by the way, what's the point of throwing money in that Trevi fountain if you know you'll be back again? :-)

Wow, 2008...that's what i call a year! Somewhere between crazy days, some let downs and great ups, new experiences and fresh starts, but hey, those are the reasons worth living for. I might just jump at a conclusion and say 2008 was the best year of it all. And my wishes for 2009...are just here, in those badly wrapped presents. :-)

As i was trying to find a title for the last picture posted here almost a month ago, i was being caught by the scientific project and the amusing fuss created around it, involving black holes and the fact that we were going to die and bla bla. It then made perfect sense in my metaphorical way of the photo: "Black holes and the end of the world" tadaa.
But then again, when selecting some next pictures and not finding another perfect title for them than this last one, i found it funny to announce that this time, the place is the real "end of the world", as for the black holes, well, not so many, they may be just revelations. Sfantu Gheorghe and the Danube Delta.

About travelling

Stumbling upon a nice saying found out via Mazilique, Hemingway stated it's best to travel with people you love only. Thinking about it, i might say the ones you travel with become the ones you love. Because there's no great way to experience things than leaving your warm nest and life rythm for a while with friends or even people you have no acknowledge of. You just ask them to join you and your new adventure, and in between roads you fall in love with them, even with the ones that tend to annoy you on the way.
You'll never realise it sooner then thinking about it, long after the trip is over, and as my time to think about it came, i know i love all the people i've ever travelled with along my way, from long train trips to car sharing on the road to nowhere. Because they were there with me. I'm not a nomad though, should this be one explanation?

Hey look! I found this thingie i don't know exactly what is, because it's bright red and shiny, and when i try to touch it, i get surprised it runs away quickly. And if i were to plead in DuteVino's defence, i would say that it's the only band i could be a groovy member of on the stage and sing their tunes. What more could you ask when expressing your fondness of music?

The need to accesorize and buying new clothes comes early every new year, with the first bloom of the spring flowers, not to mention sun shining that requires proper garments to be shown accordingly to moody weather. Therefore in my case, no place was better to be at on the first day of March, than a grandma's backyard represented in an urban way by La Scena pub, and some young artists revealing their collections of original clothes, artsy crafts and vintage stuff. Travelling west in Romania is always a pleasure for the eye and mind, not to say comfort for the irritated rushed spirit of Bucharest that might be caught by anyone living there for a while. Therefore, my first experience with Timisoara was as expected and perfectly matching the idea of a dream place to live in, although, as funny as it seems, Bucharest is still offering more options when it comes to feeling alive and running free. Metaphoricaly speaking.

Constanta is quiet this time of year, but friends are not, which reminds me that happily leaving this town some years ago is not the same as leaving it now. The Dandy Warhols love almost everyone

One main reason for me to pay a ticket for a band's concert that i don't furiously listen at home day and night is that i always know that after seeing them live, i will more appreciate them. I do not agree with people saying "I know a few songs, i don't want to pay that much to see them", because obviously this is wrong, wrong, wrong. Seeing someone perform in front of thousands of people may change your perception of that music and definitely worth your money, and it has always worth mine.
For this reason, the Dandy Warhols were a wery awaited band at Stufstock 5, popular everywhere in the world, but here in Romania seeming to come from the subterranous psychedelic tunes of american rock. Not only they proved wrong, because people knew their songs, and their show (and strangely tuned instruments) put everyone in a trance, but having learned some lesson, more people started listening to Dandy's music. And we lived happily ever after. :-)

Summer's not entirely gone

Wait, there are still a few things left from Stufstock Festival this august to be shown. Then, we should not forget about Coma, the band that started all the fuss back in the Atomic Television times. Taken mainly as a joke at first (remember [RO]Nu vreau fetito casa), they developed their sound to a more defton-ish vibe, and here they are in 2007, with all the noise and capricious star attitude, but hey, i've waited for this concert since i don't know when. And it went fine. :-)

My 10 years of Kumm

My side of this story started not ten years ago, but almost, back in the early days of my highschool times in Constanta, when Cluj and all of its music were considered to be of great inspiration and attitude for us, but also very hard to get to listen. Sure there was the internet, but no proper internet connection or downloading software. Anyway, i remember a friend mentioned Kumm as being one of Cluj new releases, so i started looking for their music, until Stufstock 1, where i first got to see them, liked them and somehow later on loved their style. And the rest is...music.
So here we are, celebrating their 10th year of creation on the 29th of October at the National Opera, together with all band members since 1997 and friends playing for them one piece of Kumm, as follows: Luna Amara, Timpuri Noi, Ada Milea, Travka, The Mood and Zob.
And here they are, playing at MTR in their last appearance until that big day:

Ok, summer is gone, guess it's time to review some of the past events that happend in it's sunny days. Stufstock 5 that is. And for this particular occasion, i will start with some freshmen, playing at Shoni's stage for some lazy afternoon public that might have gone swimming between concerts. I know i did. But boy, these guys played anything but lazy beats, they were sharp, precise and very determined to hit those instruments (and voice) military style, like we were actually participating in a gun shooting. They want to be the avant-garde of the moment, for me they were the perfect start of the festival. Mauser:

B'estival day 3

Tonight was heavy metal night (and not only) which made Alice Cooper rock the place with his well known ultra terrifying show :P, and Marilyn Manson feel like a spoiled brat. The latter was a bit of a disapointer for some of us that were expecting a longer, unified concert. I wasn't, therefore it was great.
Conclusion: B'estival was a succes, looking forward to next year.

Following day 1 at B'estival, where Hooverphonic, Morcheeba and Faithless made a great show and stired the gathered crowd with trance, trip-hop, house and "call them whatever" vibes, day 2 was not remarcable as the previous one.
Kasabian were great, the public loved Reammon and Pink had a very prepared show, not to mention her voice, but nothing got my attention. Maybe because it's not the type of music i'd listen to, but there'll be something for me today, i guess. :)

When i was little, like every child that has a voice and is involved in many singing actions, i had the chance to become a singer. When asked whether i'd like to become a singer or not, i'd always promptly said no, because all i knew back then was the image of a Celine Dion wannabe singing weeping love songs all the time. If only i'd new there was jazz, if only i'd listened to funk, i would have known this is what i'd sing about. :) Those memories came back yesterday, when attending BIMS at their very much applauded appearance in B52 and yes, nobody could ever say it better, because this is all that jazz-funk. "They give me feee-ver!"

...excitement. Like a first rollercoaster ride. I must admit i didn't think it would be much fun, but wandering small streets at dawn, seeing beautiful architecture everywhere, riding bikes in the park, travelling with small subway trains while making fun of the pronunciation of the stations proved me wrong. And altough rollercoaster experience might be a first and a last, Budapest is on my 'must come back' list.

What's more appropiate for a wednesday night than a bit of wine and a little bit of jazz, altough, if you ask me, jazz never comes in small bits, but only in big beautifully wraped boxes, like presents for everyone searching for a chill evening. Noisy weekend nights are still far away. And this time, it was Alex Harding and Lucian Ban's night, accompanied by Arthur Balogh and sometimes Ciprian Parghel bass players.

Finally, Oliver. Been to their concert in B52, because they are part of my family and somehow we grew strong and old together since my came in Bucharest. And because, despite all that, they still have nice surprises for me everytime i see them. This time, Mihnea from Luna Amara walked on the stage for a bit of a tune.

Rush hours

Rush hours in Bucharest may seem to have lost their meaning. Every hour here is rush hour. People running in every direction stumble upon other people. They are caught unguarded and raise their eyes in surprise to see another one just like them disturbed from his mountain of thoughts, trying to act quickly as to get rid of the weird situation. "I'm sorry!", they smile. Sometimes they find themselves quite annoyed and frown at their ad hoc counterpart until he quits standing in their way. Sometimes they make the same moves, forming a hilarious dance until one decides it's best to step back and continue his thinking on another path.
So they leave, and when they stop rushing their thoughts go... silent.

The art of conversation

Sometimes nights are long, and conversation runs like smoke from a cigarette. In the poor light of your room you could notice it getting away in circles and spirals, like transparent canvas at first, floating in the air for a few moments just to dissapear later. If you follow smoke, it will trick you at some point, and you will light another cigarette to see what happens. Then another one, and of course, another one, if it weren't for the light of dawn rising somewhere behind the window. That's how conversation runs too. Morning finds just a full ashtray in the middle of an unfinished sentence.

...is leaving it for a better, sunnier ground, in our case, Transylvania. Setting off for Sibiu at first (for a cup of tea and a bit of a jazz concert) , we found a beautiful autumn weather that made us
think of visiting the fortified german churches around, all the way to Sighisoara. That means churches that were fortified to resist the turkish siege, so much that they began looking like castels. Part of our history that hasn't been revealed much.

Stufstock 2006 - Phoenix

By far the most wanted and loved band at the festival, as seen by the large crowd that gathered by the gates just before the concert, Phoenix did their great show and nobody could ever deny it. Becouse they are old, becouse they are great artists, becouse they are legends here in Romania. They sounded like perfect.

Stufstock 2006 - Alternosfera and Gandul Matei

One thing is sure about moldavians. They rock! I have never seen such talented people all together, when it comes to music. Alternosfera were the only band, as i remember, to have to play with visuals on the big screen here at Stufstock, creating inspiring atmosphere, and the old Gandul Matzei group, that rocked the stage with hard-rock-soft-ethno tunes. I did not shoot many photos at their concerts, becouse all i did was jump around.

Grimus are some sort of a new band when it comes to singing in Bucharest's clubs, and i guess people that knew them were happy to see them play at Stufstock. I think the ones that hadn't heard of Grimus before liked them too, becouse they sound like lemon fresh here in beautiful Romania. Am i right?

The guys (and girl) from Timisoara known as Blazzaj sang at the fourth edition of Stufstock in Vama Veche too, and they were mostly apreciated. Not to say Cristina Padurariu's (pregnant) appearance, Tavi Horvath's attitude and Utu Pascu's retro flower sunglasses together with the funky jazz vibes made the public explode with joy and sing along. We want more!

Fanfest 2006 - Part two

Word of the days was: "Roooooock". Most people came to Fanfest to have fun and drink, as themselfes said, and forgot the main reason for being there. Not to say some were very surprised when we told them we came all the way from Bucharest to see the bands. Luna Amara had a great show and Altar also, and you could see people respond better to bands from Cluj, Timisoara, Oradea, as it was obvious most of them came from Ardeal. Sleeping in a tent for two cold nights, having no place to wash, rain, mud and a continuous teeth pain were too much for me to enjoy the festival to the fullest. Even so, i danced and singed along with Grimus, the new revelation when it comes to rock, Blazzaj with the funky jazz beats, Blackbeers (heya Burger), Coma, and of course our friends and family, the guys from Oliver. FanFest 2006 - Part one

FanFest was the only green romanian festival of the year. You probably know the continuous fights between Gabriel Resources that wants to take over Rosia Montana and transform it into a prosperous area with a mine proposal that will actually destruct five mountains, 10 churces, 12 cemeteries and 958 farms, and some local authorities, environmental organisations and lots of other people that want to stop this, as they say, illegal action. Rosia Montana's locals have been offered money to leave the place and set somewhere else. Nowadays, you may see some once beautiful transilvanian houses, left abandoned.

That's the main reason for the "FanFest. Save Rosia Montana" festival. Set somewhere in the mountains, on a big plateau, it may have the most beautiful sights for rock concerts. It is also not so easy to get there.

Lazzzy days

Aaah...those lazy afternoons when sitting in a bar near the beach, listening to bossa nova, having a nice hungarian meal (gulas, mmm) followed by a conversation as lazy as could be until slowly falling asleep on a bench, could never compete with anything else when it comes to my idea of a nice summer. Anyhow, next stop: the mountaaains!

Out in the woods - Hagieni

Exploring the unknown: Hagieni Natural Reservation. Not to say the joy to leave our lazy saturday afternoon drink in Vama Veche and set for a small adventure not far from there. We tried to eat whatever non-poisonous fruit we found, went looking for tortoises (and found two!), bewared of snakes, crossed a pond full of reed and went "running up the hills" until sunset.

The evil cat in disguise. He wears a costume of a cute fury animal, but he is a small devil on the inside. No one could ever find him a name, becouse he is too rebel to accept one. I think he is just scared of stereotypes. That's why i'm saying: "He who finds a name for this cat, shall be generously rewarded."

Summer's second stop: Vama Veche

Unfinished business dragged me again in Constanta and Vama Veche. The use of the word "dragged" in my first sentence is not really justifiyed however, as i enjoyed every piece of this weekend, including a 5 hour trip by train on the way to the sea.
Highlight of the weekend: the road to Bucharest through Ostrov. We had to cross the Danube by boat, caught the last one leaving at 22:30, but they came back for us, although we were ready to set the tent for the night on the shore. Annoyingly, they did not let me to shoot any photos there.

Homeless

If you think i have been thrown away from my own house for constant misbehavior, lost all my belongings in a poker night or decided to follow philosophies of people who live on the street and have nothing to complain about, you must be somehow wrong. Call it whatever you wish, i am actually homeless. My home is in for renovation, my computer is gone somewhere in computers heaven, and my camera...is hidden in a bag.
I wrote this post to announce that i would not be online for some time. Luckily, this means extra time for shooting.

Summer's first stop: Vama Veche

Been to Vama Veche this weekend and behaved like a normal person that lived for years near the seaside and hadn't had his summer bath this year, although we're in the middle of July. I layed on the beach all day long, got a nice sunburn (but that's ok), and safely left my camera in the car.

Although not taking any photos in Vama Veche (you could really say i wasn't there at all just by looking at my shooting) i played a little with my camera and a sunflower's field near Limanu...

Went to Urma's last concert before the recording of their new album (Dan Byron in this photo)...

And followed a cute car on the way back to sunny Bucharest.

Playing pool...I admit i am not a good player, in fact, i'm not a player at all, and all i had to do was learn how to do it. I took some photos, but the ones i love most are Diana's. So, here they are.

School's out, summer is here. Rain came in the first day of July, but that's ok, because there will be plenty of time for hot sunny days. And this thought made me wake up pleasently surprised yesterday morning.

Electro Jazz back in Romania

My favorite romanian jazz singer, Marta Hristea, was announced to be singing together with bassist Vlaicu Golcea and guitarist Sorin Romanescu at Carturesti Tea House (many thanks to Boariu for announcing the event). Great opportunity for me to go see them, especially because Marta isn't singing here anymore, since she is living for a year now in Holland. And she was special indeed.

Saturday was graduation day. I've finished my third and last year at Marius Popp's piano jazz class. Final exam: naturally, a small concert the students gave, that turned up to be real fun after shooting some photos.

Tea time in old Bucharest

Drinking tea in an old's house garden, with roses, fig trees and little tables hidden between flowers and bushes. Somewhere you can tell someone else may be having the same tea as you only by hearing his whisper at the other table. Strangely, this isn't much possible.

Been to Kumm's concert on friday, and did not take my camera with me. Big mistake, because of the light, the weather, the grey sky and red clouds, the music and finnaly the happy rain dance. Therefore, this post should remain without its photo, and i promise myself not to make this mistake again. Over.
